We, CSO Platform for Reform, together with the undersigned endorsees
from the civil society organisations and individuals, demand for the release
of Zulfadzli Halim[1] who has been remanded for three days for allegedly
posting seditious content on his Twitter account.
Police said he is being investigated under the Sedition Act and the
Communications and Multimedia Act.
Based on Zulfazli’s tweets, he was not informed why he was asked to
present himself at the police station, and showed willingness to cooperate
with the police, as mentioned in his tweet at 1:30 AM on 24 November 2022
that he was on the way to IPD Ampang Jaya to have his statement recorded.
The alleged post was informative in nature, and neither seditious nor
alarming, as compared to the many paid content TikTok videos that went
viral before the election day.
We hope the police will also be swift to investigate the seditious
pre-election day TikTok videos and the owners of those videos.
In a new dawn of Malaysia under the leadership of YAB Dato’ Seri Anwar
Ibrahim, CSO Platform for Reform urges the police to uphold the freedom
of speech as enshrined in the Federal Constitution; and we reiterate our call
for police reform through the setting up of an Independent Police
Complaints and Misconduct Commission (IPCMC) as recommended by the
royal commission of inquiry (RCI), the Special Commission to Enhance the
Operation and Management of the Royal Malaysia Police in 2005.
