In response to the controversial Nature Conservation Agreement (NCA) on carbon
trade deal in Sabah that surfaced on the 9 November 2021 on Mongabay.com1, The
CSO Platform for Reform (Sabah Chapter) together with 10 civil society
organisations (CSO) initiated a Memorandum to demand the Sabah State
Legislative Assembly to address the questions of the NCA’s legality, as well as
engagement, disclosure and transparency on the Sabah Forest Carbon Deal.
The Memorandum was submitted at the Dewan Undangan Negeri Sabah (DUN) on
the 6 December 2021, on the first day of the Sabah DUN sitting. A full copy of the
Memorandum is attached.
The Sabah CSOs believe the DUN should be thoroughly informed about the NCA
and debate on it before it is finalised. This is because the signed NCA, as it stands,
impacts the DUN’s critical role in serving as representatives of the People of Sabah.
The Memorandum raised the concerned voices of People of Sabah together with
recommendations that DUN can refer to, to carry forward progressively for the best
interest of Sabah and her people.
The Memorandum was initiated by CSO Platform for Reform (Sabah Chapter), and
jointly issued with Bringing Back Our Rare Animals (BORA), Danau Girang Field
Centre (DGFC), Land Empowerment Animal People (LEAP), PACOS Trust,
Pergerakan Orang Wanita Empowerment and Revolution (POWER), Society for
Equality, Respect and Trust for All Sabah (SERATA), South East Asia Rainforest
Research Partnership (SEARRP), Wild Asia, World Wide Fund for Nature (WWFMalaysia)
and 1StopBorneo Wildlife (1SBW).
